My sweet number 3, Titus, is pretty go with the flow. When my kids play “band” and put on performances in our living room (which is almost daily these days), my first and second born can be found YELLING songs while jumping off furniture or dancing like crazy trying to be the center of attention. But not my number 3. He is quieter and more reserved than they. He can be found in the background quietly strumming his little play guitar while bouncing his head to the rhythm with a huge smile on his face. You see, my #3 is a supporter and he often makes straight the way for others. I want to be like my #3.
But, I get caught up in it too. I LOVE words of affirmation, and I struggle with pleasing people. I love making people happy and chatting with everybody in the room. And honestly, sometimes I get caught up in looking around instead of looking up. I get caught up in ALL the social events of football games, dinner parties, and baby showers. I get caught up in all of the day to day norms of homeschooling the children, going to the park for play dates, and making dinner. My day fills up quickly with phone calls, emails, school assignments, everyday hiccups like a skinned knee or chipped tooth, and social media, if I am honest. It is when I am here and CAUGHT UP instead of slowing down to SIT at Jesus’s feet…it is HERE in these moments when I ALWAYS fall on my face. And it is only when I fall on my face that I realize that none of it matters. When I am on my knees, I have nowhere to look but up and God reminds me of Psalm 46:10:
“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Then, I often ask God, “Be still? Like still, still?!” And He always says Yes and means it! It is in that stillness that my faith is strengthened. It is in that stillness that my trust is deepened in WHO He is. It is also in THAT stillness when I realize ALL He is and ALL I am not. Because in that stillness, I know that I am just a voice. Just as John claimed in John 1:21-23:
They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” He answered, “No.” Finally they said, “Who are you? Give us an answer to take back to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” John replied in the words of Isaiah the prophet, “I am the voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord.’”
In a world that shouts, “You can be who you want to be” and “It’s ALL about YOU”, the reality is that I am just a VOICE that cries out for Jesus. Anything HE entrusts me with is for His glory. Any position, any leadership opportunity, any success, and any children to raise are ALL from God and given for HIS glory. The truth is that I can do nothing on my own because I am nothing on my own. I am just a voice and I need Jesus daily and often to make the most of every opportunity that He gives me! It is not about me. It is not about what I have done. It is not about what I look like. It is not about what degree I have. It is not about who I raise.
It. Is. All. About. Jesus.
And that is what I want my life to look like…Him.
Just like my little #3 that never wants the spotlight on him but joyfully supports and cheers on others, I want to be that voice for Jesus! May others see, feel, and hear Jesus when they meet me! So often we get caught up in “systems” of serving God a specific way, when in reality people just need Jesus living in us! If we speak of Jesus and all He’s done for us, that is enough! Jesus is enough!
Lord, please give us the strength we need to stand up for you and be voice for your love and truth in a dark world. Give us the wisdom to know when to be still and KNOW that You are God and we are not. We need you daily, Lord, more than the air we breathe. Be glorified in me and in us, Oh Father. I love you. Amen.
